Another Tough Day : (

Gosh, I have been having such a tough time with schooling this year.... I don't know if it is my poor planning for the school day or if it is just Kelly & I butting heads every day!
Today we had a fight over what I had planned for the next topic, it really is getting on my last nerve! She HATES to go over anything twice, she doesn't want to do anything that she has already learned about even if it has been a few years since we covered it. For an example she feels since we did ancient history once already in I think her 5th grade why the heck are we going back there.... I have told her we will look into things a bit deeper but she doesn't care. It is driving me crazy!
I was so mad today I told her I want to send her back to regular school.... I kinda wish she could go back a few days and see how hard kids her age are working in class compared to her day. : (

I have certainly felt that way before...many times. We all have hard days. Why don't you get her to tell you all she does know about a subject. It might surprise you.

I agree with your daughter. Going over soemthing you feel you already know is boring and typical of how schools do things. You don't have to do it that way. If you feel you'd like to go over something you've covered before, do like Phyllis says and have her tell you what she knows already. Maybe get a book on Egypt and flip through it and see if she already knows the majority of it. Maybe something in it, like a picture will spark her interest again and she'll want to just look through the book and that will be enough. How much does she really need to know about Ancient Egypt really? Will she need to know many details about it for what she wants to be when she grows up? Or are you happy with her just have general knowledge of the time period? If she is going to college and will need to know more detail about Ancient Egypt for a class, then the textbooks will provide background info anyway or she can go look the info needed up then. In my opinion, general knowledge is best because you don't get bogged down in the detail and get turned off and when something sparks an interest then fly with it and go all out. Learn it all if she'd like, don't stop because some curriculum you are using says to move on. Go with the natural flow of energy once you find the spark. Have you tried the You Choose History Adventure books yet. They're great. I found one on Ancient Egypt yesterday. You read a few pages and you are the main character. At the end of the page you chose what you'd like to do and follow that path in teh bookm then make the next choice amd so on and so forth. There are also great history book series called A Wicked History and Horrible Histories. There are videos out now for Horrible Histories. I just made a webpage about some of the books, you can see a lot of them here http://www.toadhaven.com/Interactive%20History%20Books.html

Thank you Phyllis, Jennifer & Rhonda, I appreciate your thoughts & ideas. I just need to dust myself off again and find ideas to teach this girl!

I disagree. I think you should continue to delve deeper into subjects like history. I remember when I was in middle school and high school learning about American History that I was shocked when I found out about the omissions in younger grade history. As a college student now-I wish I would have known more about ancient Egypt. I had to take a History of Western Art and I wish I had known more about the ancient history because it was a lot about architecture.
